Getting Comfortable with the Circular Saw: A Beginner’s Guide to Cutting with Confidence

Let’s be honest - circular saws can be intimidating when you’re just starting out.  They’re loud, powerful, and if you’ve never used one before, they might seem a little scary.

But guess what? With the right safety steps and a little practice, the circular saw can become one of your most empowering tools in the shop.

Whether you’re cutting boards for a patio project or ripping plywood for a sign, this guide will help you feel more confident and in control every time you pick it up.

What is a Circular Saw, and Why Use One?

A circular saw is a handheld power saw with a rotating blade that can cut straight lines through wood, plywood, MDF, and more.  It’s ideal for:

  • Breaking down large boards

  • Making straight cuts quickly

  • Portable and easy to store

Before You Plug It In: Know Your Parts

Take a minute to get familiar with the saw.  Common features include:

  • Blade guard (protects you when not cutting)

  • Bevel adjustment (for angled cuts)

  • Depth adjustment (how deep the blade cuts)

  • Safety switch/trigger

Knowing your tool = less fear, more confidence

Safety First: Your Must-Know Basics

  • Wear safety glasses and tie back long hair

  • Use a sharp blade - a dull one can kick or bind

  • Always support your wood fully (use sawhorses or a flat surface)

  • Stand to the side of the blade - not directly behind it

  • Let the saw come to full speed before cutting

  • Never remove the safety guard

Bonus tip: Clamp your wood and mark a clear cut line.  A simple straight edge or guide makes all the difference!

Your First Cut: Start with Scrap

Don’t go straight to your project piece!  Practice a few cuts on scrap wood first:

  1. Adjust the blade depth to 1/4” below the thickness of the wood

  2. Clamp your board securely

  3. Mark the cut line with a pencil

  4. Hold the saw firmly

  5. Let the saw work - no forcing!

Real Talk: You’re Not Alone

If you’re nervous, you’re not the only one.  We’ve all been there - double-checking everything, holding our breath before that first cut.

But over time, the saw becomes familiar.  Your confidence grows.  And the projects get even more exciting.

At Third Shift Crafts, we believe women belong in the shop, behind the tools, and at the heart of every build.
