How to Set Up a Small Woodworking Space at Home

You don’t need a big garage or high-end tools to start woodworking - you just need a little space, a few essentials, and the courage to begin.
Whether you live in an apartment, a small house, or share space with family, you can absolutely carve out a functional, inspiring spot to work on your woodworking projects. Here’s how to make it happen, step by step.
Pick the Right Stop
Look for a space you can dedicate - no matter how small - to your tools and creativity. Great options include:
A corner of the garage
A laundry room with a folding table
A shed or basement nook
Even a balcony or patio with weather protection
Your “shop” doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be yours.
2. Start with the Basics
You don’t need a wall full of fancy tools to get going. Here’s a solid beginner setup:
Measuring tape - trust us, you’ll use this constantly.
Hand saw or circular saw - for cutting boards cleanly.
Drill - for assembling projects and pre-drilling holes.
Clamps - to hold pieces steady while working.
Sander or sanding block - for smooth finishes.
Workbench or sturdy table - even a folding work table will do.
Stick to versatile tools you’ll use again and again. You can always upgrade later.
3. Organize with Intention
Space is precious, so make every inch count. Here are a few smart storage ideas:
Peg boards for hanging tools
Rolling cars for flexibility
Wall-mounted bins or magnetic strips
Plastic totes for scrap wood and hardware
The goal is easy access, not perfection. Label what you can, and keep it functional.
4. Control Dust and Noise
Dust is part of woodworking, but even in a small space, you can manage it:
Use a small shop vac or hand broom regularly
Consider a dust make or safety goggles
Keep a clean-up bin nearby for scraps
For indoor or share spaces, noise can be a concern too. Look for quieter tools (like a Japanese pull saw instead of a power saw), and working during reasonable hours if others are around.
5. Make It Inspiring
This is your creative corner - decorate it! Add a sign, your favorite Bible verse or quote, or a pegboard painted in a fun color. Don’t be afraid to add personality.
Working in a space that feels yours makes all the difference.
You Don’t Need a Lot - You Just Need to Start
Don’t let space (or the lack of it) hold you back. Every craftsperson starts somewhere. Your kitchen table project today might be the first step toward something bigger tomorrow.
At Third Shift Crafts, we’re here to support makers at every stage - especially women carving out space for their creativity, their skills, and their stories.
