Router Jigs for Beginners: Safer, More Repeatable Setups
A router jig can make a cut easier to repeat, but it does not replace sound setup or safe technique. A useful jig supports the router, guides its travel, secures the work, and keeps hands away from the bit.

Before using any jig, unplug the router while installing the bit or adjusting the setup. Confirm bit compatibility, cutting direction, depth, clearance, clamp placement, and the router manufacturer’s instructions. Make a shallow test cut in scrap whenever possible.
Straight-Edge Guides
A rigid straightedge can guide the router base for grooves, dadoes, and other straight cuts. Measure the offset between the bit and the edge of the router base, then position the guide from the desired cut line. Clamp it where the router cannot contact the clamps, and verify that the base remains fully supported at the beginning and end of the pass.
Mortising Jigs
Mortising jigs may use guide bushings, edge fences, templates, or stops. The jig opening is not always the same size as the finished mortise, because the router base, guide bushing, and bit create offsets. Build or buy a design intended for your router, and test the full setup before cutting project parts.
Secure narrow workpieces so they cannot twist. Rout in multiple passes appropriate to the bit and machine rather than forcing full depth. Clear chips safely with the router stopped, and do not reach near a spinning cutter.
Circle-Cutting Jigs
A circle jig pivots the router around a fixed center point. Support both the workpiece and the waste so the final cut does not pinch the bit or drop unexpectedly. Leave enough material around the pivot, take several passes, and decide in advance whether you need the inside disc or the outside opening to be the finished piece.
Dado Guides and Sleds
Large or awkward panels are often better routed with the handheld router moving over a supported workpiece than balanced over a router table. A guide or sled should prevent side movement while leaving a broad, stable surface for the router base. Do not assume a homemade sled makes an operation safe; evaluate tipping, cutter exposure, feed direction, and work support first.
Template Routing
A template and bearing-guided bit can help create matching curved parts. Rough-cut the blank close to the template before routing so the bit is not removing excessive material. Secure the template with a method rated for the task, support the router, and pay attention to grain direction because climb-cutting and reversing grain can increase the risk of grabbing or tear-out.
Double-sided tape varies widely in holding strength and may not be suitable for every workpiece. Mechanical stops, clamps, screws in waste areas, or purpose-built fixtures may provide more dependable restraint.
Build Confidence With Test Cuts
Label each jig with its router, bit, offset, and intended use. Retire jigs that are warped, damaged, or difficult to clamp. Repeatability comes from a setup you can inspect and reproduce—not from rushing because the jig worked last time.
