Third Shift Approved: Great Builds Under $50

Great builds don't require a big budget. Some of my most satisfying projects cost almost nothing in materials — just time, skill, and a trip to the home improvement store for a couple of boards. This post is a love letter to the budget build.

Here are five projects you can build for under $50 each.

1. Floating Bedside Shelf ($15–20)

One pine board, a couple of L-brackets or a simple wall cleat, and you've got a functional

bedside shelf that looks like it cost ten times what it did. Sand it smooth, apply a coat of stain or paint, and mount it. Total time: two hours.

2. Wooden Book Tray ($10–15)

A simple handled tray made from 1x6 pine with a routed edge profile and a dowel handle. This thing looks designer but costs almost nothing. Make a few — they're great gifts and take about 90 minutes each.

3. Pipe and Board Wall Shelf ($25–40)

Grab a planed pine or hardwood board, three sets of pipe flanges, and black iron pipe nipples from the plumbing section. Mount the flanges, run the pipe through them as the brackets, and attach to the wall. Industrial look, modern appeal, ridiculous cost-to-wow ratio.

4. Wooden Serving Board ($15–25)

A nice piece of walnut or maple, shaped and sanded smooth with a routed edge and a hang hole. Finish with food-safe mineral oil. Makes a gorgeous serving board or charcuterie board that could easily sell for $60–80 if you wanted.

5. Tool Tote ($20–30)

A classic shop project: a handled wooden tote for carrying tools, gardening supplies, or anything else you want to haul around. Build it from 1x6 and 1x8 pine with a dowel handle. It's functional, it's beautiful, and it takes about three hours.

The Budget Build Mindset

Spending less doesn't mean making less. Some of the constraints that come with a limited budget actually push you to be more creative and more thoughtful. Embrace it.
