You’ve cut a board. You’ve sanded a plank. Maybe you’ve even made a crooked little sign or a wobbly stool that squeaks a bit when you sit on it.
Guess what?
You’re a woodworker.
Not “just a beginner.”
Not “kind of crafty.”
Not “someone who likes Pinterest projects.”
You. Are. A. Woodworker.
Why We Struggle to Claim the Title
At Third Shift Crafts, we talk to a lot of women who hesitate to call themselves woodworkers - like there’s a club we haven’t officially joined or a test we forgot to take.
Here’s the truth:
You don’t need a workshop full of tools, decades of experience, or a viral Instagram account to be legit. You just need curiosity, courage, and a willingness to learn.
You Don’t Need to “Know It All”
Let’s be real: no one knows everything.
Even seasoned makers Google things. They mess up cuts. They curse at warped boards.
Perfection isn’t the goal. Progress is.
You’re Allowed to Take Up Space in the Workshop
Yes, even if it’s a corner of the kitchen table
Yes, even if your saw scares you a little.
Yes, even if someone once said, “You don’t look like a woodworker.”
Spoiler alert: There is no one way to look like a woodworker.
How to Start Owning It:
Say it out loud: “I’m a woodworker.”
Tell people what you’re building
Share your wins - even the small ones
Hang up your first project (no matter how imperfect)
Connect with others who are building too.
What Makes You a Maker Isn’t Skill - It’s Spirit
Woodworking is about more than cuts and clamps. It’s about problem solving. Patience. Pride.
It’s about trying again when the first attempt didn’t go quite right.
It’s about loving the process, not just the result.
So if no one’s told you today:
You belong here. Your work matters. You’re doing great.
And yes - you’re absolutely, positively, without a doubt - a woodworker.
