Your First Woodworking Project: A Beginner’s Step-By-Step Guide

Starting something new can feel overwhelming - especially when power tools, measurements, and “wood types” are involved.  But the truth is, woodworking is absolutely doable, and you don’t have to be an expert to get started.

If you’ve been thing, “I’d love to make something, but I have no idea where to begin…” - this post is for you.

Step 1: Pick a Simple First Project

Your first build should be:

  • Small (less wood, less stress)

  • Useful (so you’ll feel proud every time you see it)

  • Straightforward (no complicated angles or advanced joinery)

Here are a few perfect beginner ideas:

  • A simple tray or serving board

  • A rustic wall shelf

  • A wooden sign with your favorite quote

  • A stackable crate or storage bin

We’ll be sharing more beginner-friendly project plans soon - stay tuned!

Step 2:  Gather Your Tools

You only need a few tools to complete your first project.  Start with:

  • Tape measure

  • Pencil

  • Hand saw or circular saw

  • Drill

  • Sander or sanding block

  • Wood glue

  • Clamps (optional but helpful)

  • Screws, Nails, etc.

Don’t have a big shop? No problem. Many women work right from their kitchen tables or patios - no workshop needed.

Step 3: Choose Your Wood

For beginners, stick with softwoods like:

  • Pine (affordable, easy to cut)

  • Cedar (smells amazing and finishes beautifully)

  • Poplar (inexpensive and smooth)

You can find pre-cut boards at hardware stores or ask them to cut your pieces for you - yes, they’ll do it!

Step 4:  Measure Twice, Cut Once

Before you cut a single board:

  • Double-check your measurements

  • Mark your cut lines clearly with a pencil

  • Use a square to keep lines straight

Even if it’s not perfect, you’re learning - and that’s what matters

Step 5: Sand, Assemble & Finish

After cutting your pieces:

  1. Sand all surface and edges (trust us, it makes a huge difference)

  2. Assemble using glue, nails, or screws depending on your design

  3. Finish with a coat of stain, paint, or sealant.

You’ll be amazed at how rewarding it feels to create something with your own two hands.
